The columns are made of green Prato marble, also called 'serpentine', which is a metamorphic rock belonging to the Apennine serpentinites. It is an elegant column with very bright colour available in various heights and diameters. The stone, characterized by the green colour, sometimes slightly variegated, can present various shades tending for example to grey or blue and sometimes towards a very dark green, called “black marble of Prato”. It lends itself to easy polishing even with a structure that is not perfectly homogeneous.
This stone has been used since the Middle Ages, perhaps also because of its resemblance with the ancient green porphyry, one of the most used stones in the inlays of the late Roman opus sectile. The artistic fortune of the 'green Prato', coincides with the blossoming of the Tuscan Romanesque architecture, together with the Alberese stone or the Carrara marble, to the typical bichromy of the Tuscan Romanesque: Pisan, but above all Lucca, Pistoia, Prato, Florence.
