The bust of the Christ is a replica of the head from the bronze Crucifix of Donatello destined to the altar of the Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padua, made by the artist in 1447. The state of suffering is rendered with great intensity and represents an anti-classical component that descendes from the Gothic tradition, but together with the perfect proportions and the anatomical beauty that recalls the Greek sculpture that is recomposed according to a classic balance. The inclination to an accentuated realism and to the sense of the typical tragedy of Donatello is attenuated by a search for harmony that ennobles the image of Christ.
The effects of agony are mainly shown in the beautiful face and in the head of Christ. The head is a masterpiece in the smallest details, with the hairs of the beard and the hair meticulously modelled, perfectly combed and marked in the middle. The cheeks are worn and the eyes dug deeply, crowned by thick eyelashes, now they are almost completely closed. The mouth is half open, allowing a glimpse of the perfect dentition, that suggests the wind of life from this sublime and violated body.
