Michelangelo is part of the "Bodyguards of the Art Palace" collection.
To Shi Men, both Michelangelo Buonarroti and Leonardo da Vinci represent two vajra warriors who are guarding the entrance to the Art Palace.
Instead of the conventional warriors’ ferocious features, Shi Men drew his inspiration from the culture of Chu state (1030 - 223 BCE), and
created these two sculptures in homage to these two remarkable men.
A proud son of Florence, Michelangelo is holding the Duomo of Florence and his own in Vatican. As Giorgio Vasari wrote, Michelangelo was “supreme in not one are alone but in all three” art forms that were painting, sculpture and architecture.
In addition to his great admiration for the wise man, Shi Men also channeled how he discovered Michelangelo during his first trip to Italy in 2012 through this sculpture.
