Vighen Avetis was born in Yerevan in 1968 from an ancient family that has always cultivated the love for the highest cultural traditions of his land. The sculpture “The Mother of Armenia” is a statue of great emotional impact sculpted on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide (1915-2015) exposed in front of the municipal building of Carviglia and coming from Piazza del Duomo in Florence and previously located in Piazza del Duomo in Siena.
The sculpture represents a mother who protects and saves with her own embrace under her mantle her four children from an announced massacre, precisely that of the Armenians in 1915. The woman's dress is closed by a brooch on the back. As a cameo it has the ancient church of the Holy Cross, the absolute monument of the Armenian Genocide which is located on the Aktamar island near the Van lake, in eastern Turkey on the border with Armenia, sadly known in the news for having been one of the places where the Armenians were massacred during the genocide. The harmonious movement of the figures and the monumental gravity of the gestures give the sculpture an aura of sacred solemnity and of very human spiritual levity. This work is a true miracle of balance between feeling and reason, between the dramatic story of Genocide and the eternal love of one mother.
