Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. Universally considered one of the greatest geniuses in the history of music, his works are notable for intellectual depth, mastery of technical and expressive means and for artistic beauty. Bach, unlike the use of the time, in some works such as ”The Art of Escape” and “The Music Offer”, gave no indication about the tools to be used, suggesting the possibility of execution on different instruments.
Very devoted to the Lutheran faith, Bach placed much attention in the sacred music and the Lutheran hymns were the basis of many of his compositions. His interest in liturgy led him to the realization of very high sacred compositions from both a technical and a qualitative point of view. He was afflicted by a gradual blindness and remained completely blind in the last years of his life. Affected by diabetes, Bach died on July 28, 1750 following a cardiac collapse.
In the most famous portraits he is often represented in the late age of his life as a big and serious man wearing a wig and is dressed in elegant clothes in harmony with the fashion of the moment.
