The Chimera was according to Greek mythology a monstrous fire-breathing female creature from Lycia in Asia Minor, composed of the parts of multiple animals: upon the body of a lioness with a tail that ended up in a snake’s head, the head of a goat arose on her back at the centre of her spine.
The Chimera was finally defeated by Bellerophon, a Greek hero, with the help of Pegasus at the command of King Lobates of Lycia. Since Pegasus could fly Bellerophon shot the Chimera from the air, safe from her heads and breath.
The “Etruscan Chimera” was discovered in 1553 in Arezzo during some excavations out of the Urban Walls. The "Etruscan Chimera" is located in the National Acheological Museum of Florence.
