The white marble works of Maurizio Toffoletti—an artist from Puglia who has chosen to live and work between Paris and Pietrasanta for over twenty years—map out deeply evocative paths in which the viewer is invited to participate actively.
His exploration of light—a quality that defined the greatness of the Impressionists—leads him to create sculptures that are essentially droplets of light and transparency. His works are crafted from the renowned marble of the Michelangelo Quarry in Carrara, a stone that possesses a unique, inherent luminosity.
Since 1990, he has been developing his “sound sculptures”: works that release resonant tones when caressed, creating the sensation of touching sound itself and feeling its vibrations against the skin of one’s hand. Depending on its position within the quarry and its specific mineral composition, each individual block of marble produces a distinct sound—varying in amplification and melody—with the finest examples sometimes evoking the ethereal lightness of a harp.
His sculptures are meant to be admired, touched, and heard.
