Lost wax bronze casting.
This little statuette is beautiful and faithful replica of the masterpiece by Jean de Boulogne (1529-1608).
The work of art was commissioned by Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici. It was initially ment to be located for the lodge of Ferdinando's villa in Rome. The beautiful and slim figure of the god Mercury was standing on top f a fountain in the center of a monumental staircase.
The wondeful flying Mercury was the starting point for a new conception for Giambologna, who started compising figures with a different and unusual balance.
This new concept is expressed in the vertical movement with which the Mercury is constructed, almost dancing without weight, probably starting to fly.
