The work is a clear reference to the statue made by Polykleitos around 420 BC. and today known only from Roman marble copies, the best of which is considered the Diadumen of Delos in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Probably the work was sculpted in Athens, where the artist had come to know his colleague Phidias, as evidenced by a certain influence in the shape and attitude of the head. A young naked athlete raises his arms to tie the victory bandage (tapeworm) on his head.
