The equestrian monument celebrates Gattamelata, an important leader of the Renaissance period. He was first captain of the people in Florence, then in the Vatican and finally in Venice. The artist chosen to celebrate this figure was Donatello and the work was placed in. The figure of Gattamelata is traced according to the humanistic taste prevailing at the time: he is in fact portrayed proud and severe and carries the staff of command in his hand. The equestrian monument to Gattamelata was erected by Donatello at the behest of the family zi della Famiglia departed from the Senate of the Republic of Venice.
Donatello created a work based on the humanistic cult of the individual, where human action appears to be guided by thought. The figure of Gattamelata is in fact proud and severe, and carries the staff of the command, probably the brother of the Republic of Venice in 1438. Both the horse and the leader are represented in full size.
