This bust of Cosimo I de’ Medici was realized by Benvenuto Cellini, one of the most important Renaissance sculptors, famous for the Perseus with the head of Medusa’s statue in Piazza della Signoria. Cosimo was one of the greatest personalities of his time and he changed the city of Florence with buildings like The Vasari Corridor.
Cellini represents him with an armour because Cosimo was an exceptional captain: he achieved to conquer the city of Siena.
The bust is characterized by a high accuracy, especially in the armour’s decoration, very detailed.
