Author: Augusto Rivalta ( 1837-1925)
Period: 1864
Augusto Rivalta was one of the excellent Italian sculptors of the late 19th century. Rivalta was born in Alexandria, Egypt, of Italian parents. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence and Genoa with the greatest Italian sculptors of his time, Costoli and Dupré. However, he was also extremely tied to the city of Genoa for which he made important public monuments, including the equestrian statue of Garibaldi. Having actively participated in the Italian Risorgimento, he was chosen to represent its major leaders: from Garibaldi himself to Ricasoli, Vittorio Emanuele II and others, they were all represented through his statuary. The original masterpiece is exhibited at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Rome.
