Giovanni Balderi is a sculptor born in Seravezza, a city famous for marble. He then studied in Pietrasanta, another city very famous for sculpture. He worked in important studios perfecting his style until he reached the level of the great masters. His particular marble processing, which allows him to make the surfaces perfectly smooth and almost translucent, makes him a unique artist. He is linked to his creations by an almost sentimental bond, the care he takes in sculpting is such that Balderi seems more concerned with hurting than damaging the sculptures. Complete dedication and extreme craftsmanship lead to spectacular results. The sculptures seem to have emerged from a classical past. Although often headless or without complete limbs, their beauty has remained intact. Almost ethereal creations, they are covered by a drapery that slides over the surface like silk. The mastery in making these very thin veils recalls that of the great neoclassical sculptors such as Canova. Here it represents a woman who must have been the ancient Egyptian queen of legendary beauty, Nefertiti, who ruled in one of the most prosperous periods in Egyptian history.
