Author: Donatello ( 1386-1468)
Period: 1440
The original masterpiece si now conserved inside the National Bargello Museum, Florence.
The David was probably realized for the courtyard of Palazzo Medici for the marriage of Lorenzo il Magnifico with Clarice Orsini in 1469.
The statue has got the attributes both of the biblical hero (the head of Goliath and the sword) and that of the Roman God Mercury ( the winged boots). The hero is depicted standing, with quite an unusual pointed hat called petaso. The body is that of a young boy, modeled in the classical way, joyous and soft in the posture, delicate and ephebic, extremely harmonious and light, proud and self-confident at the same time. In his right hand he is holding the sword and hidden in the back, the left hand is holding the stone with which he has just killed Goliath.
The David’s face seems to be full of thoughts: trough his expression he transmits superiority and a youthful malice, with a gaze that is conscious of the mastodontic challenge he has faced and is very proud of the outcome.
