Achille D'Orsi (1845-1929) was an Italian sculptor, one of the best exponents of social realism. He was trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, but he perfected his art with a stay in Rome, before returning to live in the capital of Campania. In his work, mostly small-scale terracotta or chalk sketches, they are interpreted in an expressive way taken from everyday reality. The sculptor soon gained great fame in Naples, coining some subjects that later became popular in the genre sculpture repertoire such as scugnizzi, fishermen and street vendors.
This superb bronze sculpture represents the replica of his famous fisherboy, a young boy on the top of the rock removing a crab from a large basket. It is a most successful statue of the production of Achille D'Orsi, revived in numerous replicas and variations mostly in the private collections. The reasons for success are sought in lively realism, in descriptive naturalism and in the clear technique with which the beauty and dynamism of the child's body is made.
