The Danish artist Bjørn Skaarup realized a series called “Carnival of the animals”, from the musical suite of the same name, written by a French composer Camille Saint-Saens, which transform animal attributes into music.
The artist creates a world of joy and delightful humour. It is inspired by many traditions, as well as that of the Fables of Aesop. Most of the stories of the ancient Greek writer speak of animals that have human characteristics.
The ermine (here in the guise of Saint George) is a brutal predator, whose mere presence causes panic in any chicken coop or rabbit hutch, but also an elegant and lissome animal that changes the colour of its coat each season. Classical bestiaries refer to the ermine as a gallant creature that throws itself into life-threatening ventures and enterprises, depicting it as a noble and chivalrous warrior. As a Don Quixote or a Saint George of the animal kingdom, the small animal is the lonesome knight on a fearless that wanders against the evils of this world as shown in this representation of an ermine in full armour that advances boldly towards a lizard dressed up as a dragon.
