Hand carved polychrome bust.
Interesting bust portrait of emperor Lucio Settimio Severo.
Having come to power after the Roman Civil War of 193-197, he was the founder of the Severian dynasty. Lucius Septimius Severus was a Roman Emperor, the first who was born in a Roman’s Province. In line with the choices of Marcus Aurelius he restored to his death the dynastic principle of succession, by taking over the sons Caracalla and Geta.
He was also the initiator of a new cult that focused on the figure of the emperor, laying the foundations for a sort of "sacred monarchy" borrowed from the Hellenistic East.
He was a great general and he defeated Parthian Empire who had occupied the east provinces for a long time. His bust symbolizes strength and authority, the emperor is portrayed with curly hair and bearded.
