Lost wax bronze replica from original mold.
Author: Anon
Period: III century B.C.
The Wrestlers are a very famous sculptural group in marble from the Roman era, already a replica of a previous Greek bronze group that was lost. The two men are involved in a real Olympic discipline called "Pancratio", similar to the martial arts of today. They are in obvious excitement and one of the two seems to have the upper hand over the other by crushing him down and forcing him to surrender after locking his arm.
The sculptor who created this piece invented with it a real sculptural format called "simplegmata", or more physicists grouped and intertwined with each other in a fight or even in an act of love. The original masterpiece is now kept in the Ufizzi Gallery, Florence.
