Lost wax bronze replica.
Author: Giambologna
Period: 1580
This replica is a portentous but faithful enlargement of the original, which is 175 cm high and is now in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence.
It was created on commission from Cardinal Ferdinando I de 'Medici, who wanted it for his Roman Villa, mounted on top of a fountain that adorned the beginning of a staircase. The beautiful and fluctuating Mercury marked the beginning of a new period for the artist, in which he ventured into the composition of figures with a particular balance and stillness.
