Lost wax bronze replica from original mold.
The original was commissioned by the Accademia del Disegno of which Stoldo was a member and was executed in 1570-1573. The work is kept in the study of Francesco I de Medici in Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, while its stucco replica is located in London, in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Stolto Lorenzi (1534-1583) was a minor sculptor of the Mannerist period, greatly influenced by Renaissance sculptors such as Tribolo and Giambologna. The myth of Galatea is told in Ovid's Metamorphoses, where it is said that King Pygmalion is transformed into a sculptor and falls in love with a small ivory statuette he made with his own hands. The Goddess Aphrodite rewards him by transforming his sweetheart into a real woman and the two crown their love by getting married.
