Author: Giambologna (1529-1608)
Period: 1589
The original masterpiece is located in Piazza della Signoria, Florence. The statue was commissioned to Giambologna, the most important sculptor active in Florence at the time of Ferdinando I de 'Medici, to celebrate his father, Cosimo I. The statue was placed in Piazza della Signoria, in Florence, and was a great success, so much so that the artist had to make several versions of it in the most powerful European courts of the time. In the night between 27 and 28 September 1591 in the presence of Don Giovanni De 'Medici and with the assistance of eighteen craftsmen, the horse was cast in a single range, an exceptional feat for such a size that forced Giambologna to use of a foundry specially created for the occasion near his home in Borgo Pinti, in the historic center of Florence.
The statue had a great fame, celebrated throughout Europe, and Giambologna received many similar commissions for similar monuments: for Paris the Monument to Henry IV of Bourbon, which was destroyed during the French Revolution, for Madrid that to Philip III of Spain, still today. in the Plaza Mayor.
